About St. Mary

St. Mary is a Roman Catholic church in Horsforth, West Yorkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Leeds.

Introduction

The foundation stone of the School-Chapel was laid in March 1896 and it opened in September of that year.

History

In 1896 Father John Croskell came to Horsforth and Mr Moor rented Pear Tree House on Bachelor Lane to hold services in. In 1908 Fr John Curan was appointed Parish Priest and looked after the parish for 24 years. In 1972 the interior of the church was brought into line with the reforms of the Second Vatican Council and a narthex built at the west end. The present church was opened on Easter Tuesday 1928 at a cost of £12,000.

Sacraments and pastoral care

Parents are directed to speak to a priest after Sunday Mass to enrol their child on a first sacrament programme. Those interested in becoming Catholic can have a no-pressure conversation with a priest after Mass.
