About Holy Name of Jesus

Holy Name of Jesus is a Roman Catholic church in Leeds, West Yorkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Leeds.

Introduction

The church was designed by Mr. Stephen Simpson and built by the Leeds building firm 'Mary Harrison'. The church's name, the Holy Name, came from a parishioner's suggestion.

History

The parish began as a wartime expedient because people had difficulty getting to Mass due to fuel restrictions during the Second World War. A parish committee took an option on three and a half acres of land in Otley Old Road, the site of the present church. A cheque for £2,500 intended for a war memorial that never materialized was given. The church's £12,000 target was raised through bingo, raffles, whist-drives, dances, bazaars and garden parties. Within a month of the delegation's request, the parish received its first priest, who had just finished building the church in Kendray, Barnsley.

Regular events

During World War II, Mass was celebrated at the Lawnswood Arms on Otley Road because of fuel restrictions. After the war, Mass was celebrated at Adel Community Centre in the grounds of the Friends Meeting House, but only on condition of no singing.

Sacraments and pastoral care

Parents are asked to speak to a priest after Sunday Mass to enrol their child on a first sacrament programme. Those interested in becoming Catholic can have a no-pressure conversation with a priest after Mass.

Visiting

Alpha is a series of group conversations exploring the basics of the Christian faith, including a meal, video, and small group discussion. Two SVP conferences within the parish of Our Lady of Kirkstall are based at the Holy Name of Jesus Church and at St Mary's Church, Horsforth, sharing coverage of the former parish of Assumption.
