About The Immaculate Conception

The Immaculate Conception is a Roman Catholic church in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire. It is part of the Diocese of Aberdeen.

Introduction

The Immaculate Conception in Inverurie, within the Diocese of Aberdeen, was completed in 1852 and dedicated to Mary under the title of the Immaculate Conception.

History

Before a permanent building existed, local Catholics were ministered to by staff from the priest-training college at Blairs. The dedication to the Immaculate Conception preceded the formal dogma pronouncement by Pope Pius IX in 1854 by two years.

Music and liturgy

The parish maintains a steady rhythm of regular weekly Masses, confessions, and services alongside its vigil and Sunday morning liturgies. Because the historic church building is intimate in size, Sunday morning Mass is celebrated in the parish hall to accommodate the growing congregation.

Parish life

The parish organises active community and youth initiatives, such as Christian prayer, discussion series, seasonal talks, and Youth Groups for primary- and secondary-school-age children. The youth groups have raised funds for charities such as Saint Kizito Schools & Community Charity and Street Friends Aberdeen, and have helped Street Friends Aberdeen meet homeless people in Aberdeen City.

The parish offers sacramental classes for children aged 7 and above to prepare for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, with the timetable aligned to Aberdeenshire school term dates. The parish serves Catholics residing in the Alford area, which is outside the canonical boundaries, and includes them in the parish. The parish has run weekly youth activities for young people from P4 to S6 since 2017, organized into two youth groups.
