About Christ the King – Cardiff

Christ the King – Cardiff is a Roman Catholic church in Llanishen, South Glamorgan. It is part of the Archdiocese of Cardiff-Menevia.

Introduction

A Mass centre on the north Llanishen estate, dedicated to Our Lady Queen of the Universe, became a separate parish in the 1960s and was rededicated as Christ the King in the 1970s.

History

A dual-purpose church and hall from the 1950s was joined by a new church in the late 1970s. In 2011 the hall at Christ the King underwent a complete refurbishment and gained a new extension, followed by important works on the church.

Music and liturgy

A 3 Churches Liturgy Group meets regularly to plan the liturgy in the three churches. A large number of people are involved in the planning and celebration of the liturgy, with different ministries. Live video streams are available from Christ the King church.

Parish life

The parish's SVP conference works across the three churches, offering practical help to those in need. The parish runs a First Communion programme following the 'Called to His Supper' programme, with services in May or June.

Serving at the altar is open to all who have made their First Communion, male or female, children and adult. The 3 Churches Pastoral Advisory Council came into being in October 2025, replacing the previous Parish Councils for Christ the King and St Brigid’s with St Paul’s.

Sacraments and pastoral care

A period of six months' notice is usually required to arrange a wedding. Baptism can be celebrated during Mass on any Sunday, or on Saturday morning at any of the 3 Churches, with preparation for parents taking place most months.

Young parishioners receive the Sacrament of Confirmation as they become teenagers, usually in Year 8. Youngsters from the parish prepare together with a team of catechists from all 3 Churches, and the Sacrament is celebrated in one of the churches usually in late spring or summer.
