St Peter's Church, Winchester

Introduction

F A Walters designed St Peter's Church, Winchester, which was built in 1926. The church is built of ironstone rubble with Bath stone dressings and a tiled roof, and it has a good tower. The church is open during daylight hours for prayer and worship.

Music and liturgy

The church incorporates a late Romanesque doorway in the north wall, which came from St Mary Magdalen Hospital. The parish music team uses hymns and choirs to encourage congregational participation in praise. The liturgy team prepares and safeguards the parish's worship, keeping it prayerful and meaningful. The Journey in Faith course provides an opportunity to discover more about the Christian faith and what the Catholic Church believes and practices.

Regular events

The parish holds an annual afternoon of celebration, fellowship and thanksgiving for volunteers. The SVP hosts a Mass for healing with the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick twice in 2026, on 21 March and 10 October.

Sacraments and pastoral care

The parish runs a group for mothers to pray together for their children and grandchildren, with a specific set of prayers, singing, and reading the daily readings. The parish runs a group that provides emergency food and clothing to individuals and families in need across Winchester and surrounding areas. The parish runs a group that supports charitable projects through prayer, planning, and fundraising. The parish runs a group that visits and provides needed practical and emotional support to a range of individuals (including prisoners) and families living in and around Winchester, and financially supports the SVP overseas.

The parish runs Alpha, a short course that gives space to explore the Christian faith and ask questions in a relaxed setting. The parish is twinned with a diocese in Cameroon, celebrated with the Bamenda Special Mass at St Peter's.
